INITIAL TEACHING TRAINING AT WINDSOR ACADEMY TRUST

SCHOOL DIRECT INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
Windsor Academy Trust offers the School Direct initial teacher training programme in partnership with the University of Birmingham. We work with the University in recruiting and selecting trainees and provide a high-quality training programme which leads to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) at Primary level and PGDipEd with QTS at Secondary level. Applicants apply directly to a Windsor Academy Trust and undertake their placements within our family of schools.
Applications can be made via UCAS for the following School Direct training places:
- Secondary English,
- Secondary Maths,
- Secondary Biology,
- Secondary Chemistry,
- Secondary Physics,
- Secondary Modern Foreign Languages,
- Secondary Geography,
- Secondary History.
Students on our School Direct routes have placements within our family of schools which include the following secondary schools:
- Windsor High School (Halesowen)
- Kingswinford Academy (Dudley)
- Cheslyn Hay Academy (Walsall)
- Great Wyrley Academy (Walsall)
and the following primary schools:
- Colley Lane Primary Academy (Walsall)
- Goldsmith Primary Academy (Walsall)
- Rivers Primary Academy (Walsall)
- Manor Way Primary Academy (Halesowen)
- Tenterfields Primary Academy (Halesowen)
The secondary route includes two main school placements and the primary route includes three main school placements.
Students on School Direct primary routes will undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will provide 60 credits contributing to Master's level. Students on the secondary programmes undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will provide 120 credits contributing to Master's level.
Following successful completion of the 60 (level 7) credit PGCE (QTS) year, students may then opt to progress onto the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching Studies and then the MA in Teaching Studies with the University of Birmingham. Students who have completed the 120 credit PGDipEd (QTS) year may progress directly onto the MA in Teaching Studies.
EXTERNAL INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING PARTNERS
As well as offering our own School Direct initial teacher training programme in partnership with the University of Birmingham, we have three strategic partners who we work closely with to offer school placements as part of their training programmes:
Teach First - We work closely with Teach First, as a number of schools within Windsor Academy Trust can take Teach First trainees. Teach First aims to raise aspirations of our youngsters and ensure they have equal opportunities in education and in life, no matter what their economic background.
SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT
A wide range of staff are involved in Initial Teacher Training at Windsor Academy Trust. WAT has a Trust Lead for Early Career Teaching who has overall responsibility for trainees and each school has a lead mentor who has overall responsibility for trainees in their school. All trainees are assigned a trained mentor within their faculty at each of their school placements. All the training is led by experienced facilitators with a wealth of current experience leading to high quality professional and pastoral support that takes account of your well-being in your important training year.
We believe that the initial teacher training year is important in terms of giving new teachers a solid foundation in their craft of teaching. It is also an important time for the creation of networks of like-minded teachers who will be colleagues and friends for the future, supporting one another and growing together.
The principles which underpin the design of our programme are captured well by the following Judith Little quote:

Dedicated mentor support which will include:
- Regular meetings to set and review targets
- Guidance for successfully meeting the standards for Qualified Teacher Status
- Informal lesson observations and discussion about good practice
- Formal lesson observations with written feedback and the opportunity for discussion and reflection

Investing in NQTs is crucial to provide the firmest foundation in those first, formative years of teaching. We offer separate programmes for both Primary and Secondary NQTs.
You will develop your capabilities to plan and structure engaging lessons, that differentiate for the variety of groups in your class and use the latest technology and tools available. You will explore how to create a captivating climate for learning and how to handle low level disruption, as well as considering your important role in Safeguarding and supporting children with Special Educational Needs.
The programmes are run as a series of twilight sessions throughout the year to minimise impact on the classroom, plus you will utilise IRIS technology to reflect on your classroom practice in your own setting.
All development is led by experienced facilitators with a wealth of current experience leading to high quality professional and pastoral support that takes account of your well-being in your important NQT year.
